Module 1: The Good, Bad, and the Ugly in the Vineyard
Amy Dreves, Ph.D., OSU Entomologist
Our research and extension activities seek to improve management practices for control of spider and eriophyid mites and powdery mildew diseases on perennial crops and enhance our understanding of how treatments for powdery mildew control influence suppression and disrupt conservation biological control; and how various cultural practices in the vineyard enhance the presence of beneficial organisms for control of pests. We will address practices that encourage, enhance, and preserve natural enemies.
Most importantly, we will emphasize the identification, diversity and abundance of adult and immature forms at the vineyard site (and in-house collections); explain how to monitor (and record findings) using shake samples, beat funnels, Berlese’s, sweep netting, sticky tapes, and visual examination of buds, shoots, leaves. We will discuss the seasonal development of these ‘beneficials’ and their role in the vineyard. We will emphasize each natural enemies’ life history, key characters, behavior, pest to predator ratios (if known) and ecology for structuring management strategies and how this knowledge of their seasonal growth and development are instrumental in determining their potential as a biological control agent.
Module 2: Making the canopy work for you
Patty Skinkis, Ph.D., OSU Viticulturist
Research projects in canopy management will be discussed with respect to decreasing powdery mildew and botrytis infections while increasing fruit quality. Specific outcomes of leaf removal and canopy management research will be reported and discussed in this module.
Canopy management methods will be highlighted and ways in which fruit can be impacted both positively and negatively. A demonstration of different types of canopy management quantification metrics will be performed including point quadrat and sun fleck analyses, allowing you to know what to do with the numbers and make necessary adjustments in your management practices.
Module 3: Vendor Showcase
The following vendors will be on hand to demonstrate equipment/services and how it can be used in the vineyard to increase quality and efficiency. Emphasis will be on canopy management equipment (hedgers, leaf pullers, sucker removers) and other products and services – soil/water stress analysis services, reflective fabrics
